Celebrate October Holidays!

Yom Kippur

Learn about Jonah and the Whale with Puppets

Draw a picture of a whale and a picture of Jonah and cut them out. Tape each one to a drinking straw, or craft stick. That's an easy way to make two puppets. Then read the story of Jonah aloud and have the child or children act the story out using the puppets. After you have read the story, talk about forgiveness.

Child Health Day

October 6

Make a Healthy Eating Chart

Take some food ads out of the newspaper or magazines and let children cut out photos of healthy food items. Then take a piece of posterboard and decorate it with the pictures of the food by pasting them around the border. You could also just let a child draw or color pictures of food. Make a chart in the middle of the page. It could be a bar graph where a different color is filled in each time a good food is consumed. For example: color in a green square for vegetables, and purple square for fruit, red for protein, brown for grain, yellow for "good fats" such as nuts, and blue for dairy. The number of fruits, vegetables, etc. per day will vary with the age of the child, you might want to do a little research or ask your pediatrician for the proper amount.

St. Francis Feast Day

October 4

Celebrate Animals & Pets

Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi

October 4th

It is a tradition to have a blessing of the animals on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi because of his great love for all "critters". Treat your pet to a walk or special dinner. Go to the zoo. Spend time playing with a pet. Go bird watching with a pair of binoculars and a book to help you identify the birds that you see. Make a bird feeder. Place it outdoors and fill it with seeds. (Once you start such a feeding place, it is important to continue supplying food, because the birds can begin to rely on it.)

Sweetest Day

October 18

Do a "Good Turn"

Sweetest Day began as a day to reach out to others and do something for those who are underprivileged or forgotten. It has become a day to remember those we love. As a family, do something today to show thoughtfulness to someone who may be alone. Cheer someone who is having a challenging time. Make a phone call. Send a card. Pick some flowers from your garden or purchase a small bouquet and surprise someone with flowers. Make extra food for dinner and invite someone to share the meal. While you're at it, do something special to let those in your family know that they are loved too.

United Nations Day

October 24

Learn about Games Children Play in another Country

Pick a country and do a little research to find out what some of their traditional toys and games might be. Try a few of them out to celebrate United Nations Day. The more we know about other countries, the better the chances are that we can learn to get along with people who have a culture that is not the same as our own.

Here are some ideas to get you started: Chinese checkers; Chinese jump rope (you can make one with rubber bands); Parcheesi, the Game of India; Shadow puppets, also from India; nesting dolls from Russia, Origami art (folded paper) from Japan, and piñatas from Mexico.

Columbus Day

October13

Float your boat!

Make a boat together. Use newspaper or any kind of paper. Build it from wood. Make one from a plastic bottle or jug. Create a boat using aluminum foil. Be imaginative. Float it in a puddle, in a creek, or in the kitchen sink or bathtub filled with water. Add a toy sailor, or see how many pennies it will hold before it sinks.

Make walnut shell boats by putting a small amount of clay or salt dough into half of a walnut shell. Make a sail from a small piece of paper and make two small holes on the top and bottom of the sail. Slip a toothpick through the holes. Add a small paper flag to the top of the toothpick mast.
