MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

The statistics for child abuse are troubling.

Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made each year in the United States.

A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds.

5 children a day die as a result of child abuse.

More than 90% of childhood sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator.

Abused children are 25% more likely to experience a teen pregnancy.

As many as two-thirds of the people in treatment for substance abuse have a history of childhood abuse.

What they are saying about this book . . .

"Finally, a book for children who have survived or are surviving the horrors of sexual abuse! "Sunbeams" helps remind children to know they have a purpose in this world. That purpose not only involves them thriving within themselves, but that they are significant in the web of life."

T. C. G. ,  former client

"Sunbeams captures the life lived by many child victims of sexual abuse, a life of three worlds where in one world they bravely live the live of the expected, another dark world filled with terror, and a survivor world where the resilience of the child exists. Sunbeams is the often untold story, and it is written by a therapist and advocate for survivors of sexual abuse. Jean is a therapist who has worked in the field of abuse for many years. Her in-depth knowledge and understanding of the issues allows her to reach clients in ways other cannot. She sees the Sunbeams in others and has helped hundred of victims more beyond their story. It is rare to find a story that is more comprehensive about the difficult journey. I helps to shine light into the darkness."

Sunbeams

Helps to heal the life of a child who has been a victim of abuse.

The Sunbeams story was written and illustrated to help a child who has been abused, or is currently in an at-risk situation--

in two very special ways.

First, it lets them know that they are not alone. Findings show that abused children are often lonely and feel "different'--a situation which compounds the problems and often makes them feel guilty, when they are not.

Second, the story encourages a child to keep telling people what is going on until someone listens. (For adults who read this book, the hope is that you will pay attention to the words of children, believe them, and follow up if there is any indication of a problem. Hear what children say.)

The story itself tells the main character that she is special because she helps the sun to come up in the morning by being one of the special children who has been selected to do that very important job of pulling on a sunbeam to raise the sun.

We cannot always prevent child abuse, but we can listen to a child if they approach us with their problems, believe what they are telling us and then ACT.

About the Author

Jean Holtz has provided counseling to thousands of teen and adult survivors of sexual abuse.

I have worked in the specialty area of abuse for more than 20 years. The most common trait among survivors of abuse is their taking on the shame and the blame for what is happening to them. I don't know how abusers do this but they are very good at transferring their blame and shame onto the victim. It is never the victims fault. Like nearly all survivors the story of "Sunbeams' talks about a girl who feels alone in her abuse. I am hoping that the story may help someone believe they are not alone, that someone will help them if they are courageous enough to open up to someone and that there is joy and life after abuse.

I have a double masters degree in clinical counseling and counseling studies. I am married with 3 adult children, two grandchildren and one on the way. My husband and I now share our home in Arizona with a golden doodle dog named Bailey.

I have written many children's stories but this is the first on the topic of abuse. I welcome reader contact and hope that if you are a survivor of abuse you will know that you are not alone. You are a survivor not a victim!
