GERTIE'S CHRISTMAS MAGIC

By Donna Pogue

Illustrated by Kas Winters

A Christmas Story for Children of ALL ages!

Chocolate Mint Treat

For a warm chocolate mint treat, stir your cup of hot chocolate with a candy cane. The candy cane will melt a little and add some mint flavoring to the chocolate. Floating marshmallows on top adds a nice touch as well. Another way to add the mint is to melt a piece of mint chocolate candy in your cocoa.

Glue and Glitter Ornaments

glitterstar.JPG (105080 bytes)

Materials: white glue, glitter, waxed paper, heavy thread, paper, pencil

Use paper and pencil to draw an ornament shape such as a star, bell or candy cane. Place a piece of waxed paper over the shape. Use the white glue to trace over the shape. This should leave your shape in a thick bead of glue on top of the waxed paper. Sprinkle glitter over the glue. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly. Shake the excess glitter onto a piece of paper and pour it back into the original container. Gently peel the glitter ornament off the waxed paper. Run a piece of thread through the ornament for hanging.

Toss Your Socks and Mittens

Roll some socks and/or mittens into balls and wrap a string or ribbon around them. Leave a tail of string that is several feet long. Place a laundry basket some distance away and try to toll your socks and mittens into the basket. Use the string to pull them back so you can try again.

Keep score in any way you choose, or not at all. Try u sing different colors and giving a different point value to each color of socks or mittens. Smaller children can toss from close to the basket, while older children have a longer distance to throw. If you get tired of tossing socks, try this with cotton balls or balloons. Now that's a challenge for any age.
